Academics

Afton Elementary places emphasis on scientifically proven programs to help ensure high levels of students achievement. When students have highly qualified teachers and proven curriculum, they reach high levels of success.

Children enjoy reading books and taking computerized tests on the books they’ve read. We have 13,347 computerized tests on a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books. Goals are set for a six week period. At the end of the six week goal, we have a reading celebration.

Children can earn HONORS in our reading program. When they earn honors, they put a sticker on our HONORS board.

Reading: We have adopted SRA’s Reading Mastery series as our reading skills curriculum and Reading Renaissance as our reading practice curriculum. Together they combine to provide a tremendous program to teach children to read and understand most any text. In Reading Mastery, students are grouped according to need. There are 87 reading groups each day. These groups are ad-hoc where students move according to achievement. In Reading Renaissance, students select books from the media center that they are interested in and that are at their independent reading level. They read these books and take AR tests on them. It is highly motivational.
