Afton Elementary places emphasis on scientifically proven programs to help ensure high levels of student achievement. When students have highly qualified teachers and proven curriculum, they reach high levels of success.
Reading practice is one of the keys to reading proficiency. We use Accelerated Reader a program that tracks student reading checking for comprehension and proficiency. Student progress is diagnosed and monitored. Students read for significant amounts of time every day at their best developmental level.
It’s not all serious though. We have regular reading celebrations honoring student achievement and, of course, posting our successes and having parties!
We have adopted SRA’s Reading Mastery series as our reading skills
curriculum and Reading Renaissance as our reading practice curriculum.
Together they combine to provide a tremendous program to teach children
to read and understand most any text. In Reading Mastery, students are
grouped according to need. There are 87 reading groups each day. These
groups are ad-hoc where students move according to achievement. In
Reading Renaissance, students select books from the media center that
they are interested in and that are at their independent reading level.
